What Documents Do I Need for Business Financing?

The essential documents lenders may use to evaluate your business and your financing request.

Business financing documents including bank statements, financial statements, tax returns and business information

One of the most common questions business owners ask is, “What documents do I need to get financing?” Being prepared shows lenders you are serious about your business and can help make the review process smoother.

Requirements can vary depending on the lender, your business, the type of financing you are seeking, and the amount you are requesting. Still, there are several documents that are commonly requested.

Common Documents Lenders May Request

Business bank statements
Often the most recent 3–6 months.
Business license or registration
Documentation showing your business is properly established.
Profit and loss statements
Your P&L can help show business performance.
Articles of incorporation or LLC documents
Organizational documents may be requested.
Balance sheet
A snapshot of your business's financial position.
Owner identification
Personal identification may be required.
Business tax returns
Often the most recent 1–2 years, when applicable.
Funding request details
The amount needed and what you plan to use it for.

Why Having Your Documents Ready Matters

When your records are organized and easy to provide, you can spend less time searching for paperwork and more time discussing what you actually need the financing to accomplish.

PRO TIP: Get organized before you apply. Keep recent bank statements, financial statements, tax documents, business formation records and identification in one secure location so they are ready when requested.

Every Lender Is Different

There is no single checklist that applies to every financing request. A lender may ask for additional information based on your industry, time in business, credit profile, cash flow, existing obligations, financing type and other factors.

The goal isn't simply to gather as many documents as possible. It's to have accurate, current information available so a financing provider can understand your business and evaluate potential options.
